Second Life (SL) was developed by Linden Lab in 2003 and launched as a virtual world environment online. Its original use was gaming but it has developed into an educational tool for many platforms. I first heard of SL through my cousin-in-law who had to play it for six hours as an assignment for her online Master's course. She created an avatar and met in a virtual classroom where she was able to meet, talk with, and see her classmates online.
